For Pursuing Environmental Risk Management
In 2006, Tamron completed excavation and cleaning operations for contaminated soil on the premises of Omiya Head Office.
As a result of our investigations and measurement of contamination of groundwater leaving the premises, we ascertained
that values were reduced to levels better than environmental standard values, partly thanks to PRB purification walls. |

History of Tamron’s Soil Purification Operations
2003
Voluntary investigation of groundwater and soil on the premises of Omiya
Head Office reveals contamination of soil by volatile organic compounds
(such as trichloroethylene and tetrachroroethylene) and heavy metal (such
as lead and boron) in excess of permissible standard values.
2004
Based on investigation results, commences countermeasures against
expansion of contamination of groundwater and soil. Countermeasures
include building PRB walls (1), excavation and removal of contaminated
soil, landfill with sound soil, and installing pumping/purifying facilities for
contaminated groundwater (2).
2005
Replacement of contaminated soil with sound soil completed at Omiya
Head Office.
Three factories in Aomori being free of contaminated soil is documented.
Major Efforts in 2006
Thorough countermeasures to prevent contamination from spreading were taken
in 2004 and 2005, and Tamron continued monitoring groundwater quality. As
a result, Tamron documented that water quality from groundwater monitoring
wells bored adjacent to PRB walls to verify their effectiveness is better than the
environmental standard. Also, the quality of groundwater in other places within the
premises has steadily improved.

Evacuation drills, fire drills, and drills
for handling harmful substances and
chemicals are carried out every year
at Omiya Head Office and factories
at home and abroad as part of risk
management. As an important
obligation of a manufacturer discharging
industrial waste, Tamron regularly also
visits waste disposers and recycling
facilities, contributing to illegal dumping
prevention. |

In order to clear environmental standard values established under the Clear Air Act, Clean
Water Act, Soil Contamination Prevention Law, and other regulations, Tamron regularly
monitors operations and measurements. Unfortunately, in 2006, Tamron was unable to
satisfy environmental standards at a few groundwater monitoring points on the premises
of Omiya Head Office due to turbid water, but there was no deviation from standard values
and other factors established under the relevant acts and laws.
