The 28-300mm VC, a high-power tele-zoom lens, is a perfect complement to a standard zoom lens. |
|
The focal-length range of the Tamron 28-300mm VC-with a 35mm equivalent range of 45-480mm when mounted on the Canon EOS 40D-is far wider than that of a 55-200mm or a 70-300mm zoom lens. As shown here, you can fill the frame with the main subject by simply zooming up from the image showing the whole scene. The Tamron 28-300mm VC is a perfect complement to a digitally integrated standard zoom, such as an 18-55mm lens.

You can capture a close-up image of your main subject by zooming in on the whole scene. Until now, camera- or hand-shake during zooming had been a problem. This lens is particularly useful in event photography.

Many camera owners buy standard zoom lenses, such as the 18-55mm or 18-70mm, designed exclusively for their digital SLRs. For years, Tamron's 28-300mm zoom lens has been a best-selling high-power standard zoom lens for full-size SLRs.
Zoom lenses often recommended as add-ons are tele-zooms, such as the 55-200mm F/4-5.6, designed exclusively for digital, and the 70-300mm F/4-5.6, designed for full-size DSLRs. The 55-200mm zoom lens is lightweight and compact among tele-zoom lenses, making it a good complement to standard zoom lenses and a good first lens for beginners. Photographers accustomed to using telephoto lenses eventually feel that the tele-end of 200mm is not enough. (See combination chart below #1 )
With a 70-300mm tele-zoom lens, a photographer can cover up to a 450mm 35mm-equivalent focal length with a Nikon or up to a 480mm-equivalent focal length with a Canon. However, if the photographer's standard zoom lens is an 18-55mm, there is a gap between the tele-end of the standard zoom lens (55mm) and the wide-end of the tele-zoom lens (70mm), which means this is not an ideal combination as a lens system. (See combination chart below #2 )

As mentioned earlier, 55-200mm and 70-300mm zoom lenses have advantages and disadvantages as add-on lenses. Tamron's 28-300mm zoom lens, with the VC mechanism, is a versatile high-power zoom lens. (See combination chart below #3 )
When compared with a 55-200mm zoom lens, its focal length range is wider at the wide- and tele-ends. When compared with a 70-300mm lens, it covers an additional range equivalent to a wide-angle zoom lens on the wide-angle side. Its 28-55mm range overlaps that of a standard zoom lens. When the 28-300mm lens is mounted on a DSLR equipped with an APS-C-sized image sensor, you may feel that the lens' wide-angle end is insufficient as a standard zoom. But with a standard zoom lens, such as an 18-55mm lens, they cover a focal length range effectively.
If you own a Canon or Nikon DSLR camera with a built-in vibration compensation mechanism, try the Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC as your add-on lens. If you have a Pentax or Sony DSLR, try the Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di as your complementary lens. Personally, I like the high-power 28-300mm zoom lens with Tamron's AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di fast standard zoom lens.
